Deathfist Ninja GKaiser started out as a very vague idea way back in 1998. Jim Freedan was 16 years old at the time, struggling to overcome "writer's block". While working on a fictional sci-fi novel, he decided to write a humorous short story about a blundering superhero named "GKaiser". Mr. Freedan had been an avid fan of television shows such as Saturday Night Live, In Living Color and MAD TV when he was growing up, and wanted to incorporate the satirical humor of these shows into his storyline, but was unable to do this with a serious sci-fi novel. Therefore, he created GKaiser.
Mr. Freedan had completed the script for 2 issues when he happened to watch an episode of Dragon Ball Z, which was being syndicated on Cartoon Network. Realizing anime was becoming very popular in the United States, Mr. Freedan decided to scrap the two scripts he had written about GKaiser and began to add manga elements to the story.
Having been a fan of Japanense anime since he was a young boy, Mr. Freedan realized that the sudden popularity of anime in mainstream Western culture was going to change the way anime was viewed. He also realized that all of the young children currently watching anime shows like Dragon Ball Z, Card Captor Sakura and Pokemon were going to eventually outgrow those shows as they got older, and would need something with more of an edge to it, but clearly had American influences. They needed a manga they would be able to call all their own, with cultural gags and jokes they would be able to easily understand.
Therefore, Deathfist Ninja GKaiser was reborn. Fueling the new background story for GKaiser was the Western legend of King Arthur and the wizard Merlin. Richter Nash, the hero of the story, would take the role of a young Arthur while the character Dragon Sage Siyoki was created to take the place of Merlin. The tale was modernized by having Richter be a selfish and cowardly teenager, who disrespects his teacher Siyoki while making repeated attempts to escape his duties as protector of the world. Keep in mind, the majority of the story takes place in the futuristic city of Mega Metropolis-Ville, firmly placing the Authorian legend into a modern setting.
Although largely meant to be a comedy story, at the heart of Deathfist Ninja GKaiser is a tale of a boy who must grow up. Richter is literally taken away from everything he knew and forced to become someone he clearly is not. The responsibilities of an adult are laid onto the shoulders of a fifteen year old boy, whether he likes it or not, and each of his adventures concern how he develops as a person due to this unique situation. Character development, the strongest element of Japanese manga stories, is a central element of Deathfist Ninja GKaiser.
Mr. Freedan goes on to say, " I wanted to create this fantastically absurd world, where the fantasy things you see in comics and movies are apart of that world's everyday reality. And then I wanted to throw a typical American teenager into this world, make him that world's most powerful hero, and see what kind of insanity happens as he tries to just survive, let alone actually try to haphazardly save that world."
In November of 2004, Mr. Freedan contacted Mrs. Jennifer Brooks to hire her as the artist for Deathfist Ninja GKaiser. Mrs. Brooks had previously worked on a webcomic titled "Blessed", located at http://www.studioeternity.com/blessed/. Mrs. Brooks artistic eye gives Deathfist Ninja GKaiser its manga style look.
The result is Deathfist Ninja GKaiser, a webmanga we hope you will enjoy! |
