I haven't updated in awhile so I just wanted to let everyone know that things are still moving with production on the pilot episode! Everything is going well!

I've made a new Youtube Channel specifically for showing the Video Blog. This should make it much easier to access the videos. The full episodes of the show will also be showcased here in a Playlist. Since I have a lot of videos on my Partner channel, having this new channel will make it much easier for people to find the episodes.

Greetings! I'd just like to let our pledgers know things are still rolling along on the GKaiser production. There is a lot going on behind the scenes and to let people know stuff is happening, here is a short video from my location scouting. This dojo will be the location for the Dragon Sage Siyoki's dojo where he trains Howard to become a "true hero".

I apologize in advance for the "Uncle Bob"-ing of the camera. I'm trying to see what the location looks like from as many different angles and types of shots as possible.

I am currently working on a new website and hopefully will have it rolling out soon. The new website will include a schedule of Milestones, such as the days we will be shooting and when (and where!) the episode will premiere. It will also include my notes on what I was doing that day related to the project, such as a production meeting or costumes being completed, etc

What the hell is tokusatsu?

Some of you may not be familiar with the word 'tokusatsu' but I'm positive you've at least heard of the shows.

Tokusatsu means 'special effects' in Japanese. Basically, they are any type of show that uses a lot of special effects such as Godzilla, Kamen Rider and Super Sentai. Tokusatsu is a broad genre that covers many other subgenres, but the three main subgenres fans tend to focus on are kaiju ("strange beast"; i.e Godzilla), hero (i.e Ultraman) and mecha (ie. Giant Robo) shows. All of these shows have an emphasis on 'suitmation' special effects (basically a guy in a monster suit).

Many tokusatsu shows are aimed at children but there are darker and edgier shows also intended for older audiences.

To help introduce people to the genre I've begun reviewing some of the shows. The first review I have is for Season 1 of the original 1966 Ultraman TV show. The show was basically the Star Trek of Japan (it even aired the same year Star Trek came out!).

We had our first round of auditions last Saturday. We had a lot of excellent candidates show up-- thank you those who did!

The crew and I are still making decisions on callbacks. We are having a production meeting this week to review the videos and deliberate. Film-making is a collaborative art and I try to solicit the opinions of my crew before making the final decision on certain things. Casting is one of them.

That said, we are moving into our second round of auditions for certain roles.

Why is DNG a "comedy"? What does that mean?

Since I have billed DNG as a "comedy superhero web series" I guess it is worth explaining what the label of "comedy" really means and how it applies to DNG.

My favorite stories are funny. Mind you, the entire story doesn't have to be comical but I have a hard time sitting through any film that is completely devoid of humor. Naturally, as a story-teller I am completely disinterested in telling stories that cannot make people laugh.

I've often been told by creative writing teachers that comedy is an elusive thing that defies explanation and is one of the most difficult things to write because of that trait....but I don't think that is true. I feel that every beautiful thing has a science which explains why it is beautiful, and comedy is no exception. I don't believe I'm alone in this opinion.

In 1935 Walt Disney decided to scientifically approach the creation of motion pictures. He hired experts in the field of visual arts to create a program in order to train his staff. One of these experts was Dr. Boris Morkovin, then chairman of the Department of Cinematography at the University of Southern California, and he was tasked with scrutinizing what made a gag work:

"Shock is the soul of the gag...we can see that when two unexpected things are brought into contrast they give a jolt to the spectators' nerves and stimulate great hilarity."

Humor is essentially two contrasting things forced to occupy the same space when the audience doesn't expect them to.

Opposites are important for creating humor. Jokes between two actors are funny but they are inherently funnier when between the fat man and the skinny man comedy duo (e.g. Abbot and Costello, Laurel and Hardy, Chris Farley and David Spade) because the characters are visually opposite from one another.

Shock is also incredibly important. To be funny the gag has to take the audience by surprise; this means the situation must be unusual. For example, look at celebrity impersonations by Jim Carrey. He is a master at comedic impersonations because he performs an impression of the celebrities while taking actions and expressing viewpoints that you would never anticipate the celebrities themselves to endorse, usually in the form of exaggerating their mild nuances to the point of absurdity. One of my favorite Jim Carrey sketches is the impression of Pee-Wee Herman from his In Living Colors days; Jim Carrey transforms Pee-Wee's distinctive childish giggle into something demented while trying to sell a Pee-Wee Herman doll with a disguise kit and "turbo fist" for masturbating in theaters.

Comedy is a very old genre; Aristotle considered it one of the four genres of literature (the other three being tragedy, epic poetry and lyric poetry). As detailed in Poetics, Aristotle believed comedies have a distinct pattern: the protagonist begins as a loser but by the end of the story has succeeded in his / her goals despite the odds against them. The comedy is distinct from the tragedy in that it always has a happy ending whereas the tragedy always has a sad ending.

The idea of what constitutes a comedy film has become muddled in recent years, primarily because of films like Meet the Spartans and Vampires Suck. So when some people first hear the label "comedy film" they think of films like those which actually fall into a very particular subgenre of comedy; spoof.

A spoof is a story which satirizes a thing solely to capitalize on the popularity of that thing.

Although I like some spoofs (such as Mel Brooks' Space Balls) I currently have little interest in making spoofs myself. I can explain why.

A satire is intended to ridicule the shortcomings of a thing. When done with noble intentions a satire is designed to persuade society or individuals into improving and re-examining important decisions.

Stephen Colbert is a popular comedian whose entire routine is satire and an example of satire done well for noble intentions.

On the other hand, the Scary Movie franchise is, in my opinion, an example of satire done for no higher purpose than to entertain and convince audiences to part with their money.

That's not necessarily bad; it's just the difference between "high art" and "low art". The Colbert Report occupies the spectrum of high-art and Scary Movie dwells in low-art. I wish to create funny stories that are high-art.

Satire tends to be a more persuasive way to cause social change than simply lecturing people about their faults by putting the critique into a package that penetrates people's walls.

My story, Deathfist Ninja GKaiser, has many satirical elements but I don't consider it to be a spoof. I do consider it to be a comedy and as a comedy it has a message. What that particular message is....well, I prefer to let others figure out for themselves.

In my experience once you dissect a joke it ceases to be funny. I want people to laugh when they watch DNG so that the message can get through their walls. I won't try to explain the jokes.

I consider myself a big fan of Walt Disney's work. Several years ago I came across one of his quotes that has had a profound impact on my style as a storyteller which I would like to share with you,

"I always like to look on the optimistic side of life, but I am realistic enough to know that life is a complex matter. With the laughs come the tears, and in developing motion pictures or television shows you must combine all the facts of life-- drama, pathos and humor."

I agree completely with Walt Disney's perspective and in writing DNG I have tried to infuse these three aspects into the story. I hope that by doing so DNG will have heart just as Walt Disney's stories do.

Webcomic Pages!

So as some of you may have noticed the webcomic page is down...... as is all the other Martell Brothers Studios related websites (such as the one for The RPG Fanatic show).

There is a perfectly good reason for why the website is down.

Ya see, my web server host for the past five years, ProLinuxWebHosting.com, has skipped town!

I guess I should have seen this coming; they haven't answered a single email from me in the past year and they disconnected their phone a couple months ago.

While I do have an old copy of the website backed up from half a year ago, I don't have access to it. The backup sits on my PC's hard-drive but the motherboard burned out ages ago. I've been a Mac user for the past year.

Anyhoo, I've gone through all my portable hard-drives and found some pages. I'll post a few of them here so you have a rough idea what the story was like.

I feel the need to point out one thing: The live-action web series will not follow the storyline of the webcomic. We're rebooting the story; that means all previous continuity has been abandoned and things can start fresh with new ideas.

The reason I'm doing this is because I was a pretty inexperienced writer back then and I feel I can do better now. Some people also felt the protagonist was too much of a jerk and there was too much needless profanity. The new web series will not have any profanity and a more likable protagonist.

Design of the GKaiser Costume

If you've been reading this blog you might be aware that GKaiser has a pretty impressive looking costume. But are you aware of how the costume was designed?

Shortly before I decided to create the webcomic I was playing a game called City of Heroes. This was in 2004. I noticed that City of Heroes had an awesome character builder, allowing you a great deal of flexibility over how a character looks.

I said to myself, "I bet I could design the costumes for the characters in GKaiser using this thing" -- and so I did!

The GKaiser costume incorporates a couple different elements from iconic heroes in other media.

Kamen Rider V3

Kamen Rider is probably one of the most famous of all tokusatsu heroes. Kamen Rider V3 was the sequel to the original show and the one I'm most familiar with. I purchased a 6-disc collector's edition boxset from Generation Kikaida Hawaii and was greatly inspired.

You can see elements of V3's costume in GKaiser in the motorcycle gloves and boots. GKaiser's scarf is also a reference; in my honest opinion it's just not Kamen Rider without a scarf of asskicking.

Science Ninja Team Gatchaman

I have vague memories of this show from when it was ported over to the States. It was re-titled "Battle of the Planets" and had sort of a Star Wars theme to it. I also remember that the local Chuck E. Cheese Pizza Time restaurant had a parody poster of Chuck E. and his friends dressed up like the Gatchaman team which I thought was pretty cool.

Anyway a key element borrowed from Gatchaman is the open mask. Because we were making a comic I felt it was important to allow a mouth so the emotions of the character could be expressed in a visual way. This element of the costume is retained for the live action show for the same reason.

Also worthy of note is the "[something] Ninja [something]" element of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman's title inspired me to name the story "Deathfist Ninja GKaiser".

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Zeo

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers was insanely popular when I was growing up. Okay, so I was like 11 years old at the time and perhaps just outside the target age for the show...but come on! It was basically the characters from Saved by the Bell beating the ever-living crap out of monsters with kung fu and giant robots! There was nothing else like it on American TV at the time and it was glorious!

.....I'm getting offtrack. Jason the Red Ranger was my favorite Ranger and it was a sad day when he left the show. To be perfectly honest I gradually stopped watching the show when Zeo rolled around but I tuned back in when I learned Jason had returned as the Gold Ranger and was x100 more badass than before. He even had his own theme song!

I knew I wanted a shout out to the Gold Ranger so from the start I was going to make my hero have a gold costume.

SaGa Frontier - Red / Al-kaiser

SaGa Frontier was the first SaGa series game I ever played and I fell madly in love with it. The SaGa games have never gotten much love in the Western gaming press but the series was once one of Square's big three franchises (the other two being Final Fantasy and Seiken Densetsu / Secret of Mana).

Red was my favorite character in the game and his story was a shout out to tokusatsu shows like Kamen Rider V3 (Red even had the same motivation as Kamen Rider V3-- revenge against the terrorist organization that murdered his parents and little sister).

All the superheroes like Al-Kaiser had a naming convention that ended with "-Kaiser", so I knew I wanted something like that, too. Since my hero was going to be gold themed, I decided I wanted him to be called "GKaiser" (pronounced "JE-KYsur") and stand for "Gold Emperor".

Costume wise, the helmet was inspiring. I liked the wings coming out of the back but I wasn't so big on the feathers so I made them more metallic. I also liked the shoulder pads.

Bat-Man

Mind you, not just any version of Batman, but the campy TV show made in the 1960's. Bat-Man (TV Series) was in syndication when I was growing up and the movie occasionally ran on, if I remember correctly, the Disney Channel.

Batman's utility belt was a big part of an episode's storyline (usually the deus ex machina he used to escape cliffhangers was something he just happened to have in his utility belt) so I wanted to incorporate the belt into GKaiser's design.

Hopefully that gives you some of an idea into the process I go through when designing a character's look for the show.

What the heck is Deathfist Ninja GKaiser??

I'm sure this is the first question you have when you hear the name.

Firstly, let's get this out of the way:

No, it's not about Nazis.

For some peculiar reason there are people who associate the word 'Kaiser' with Nazis. The reign of the German Kaisers ended before the first World War came to a close. 'Kaiser', by the way, is a German word that means 'Emperor'. Like the Russian word 'Czar', the name is a corruption of Latin 'Caesar'.

Although I considered them as potential antagonists, there are no wacky Nazis in the first season of DNG.

Maybe the second season.
We'll see.

The second question people ask when they learn there are no Nazis is, "What the heck is Deathfist Ninja GKaiser ?"

DNG is a superhero story heavily inspired by Japanese tokusatu such as Super Sentai (Power Rangers), Kamen Rider and Ultraman.

I started writing the story when I was a teenager (man, that seems so long ago!) way back in 1998. I wanted to make something that had a style of humor similar to sketch comedy shows like SNL and In Living Color; lots of surrealism, lots of parodies.

However I was also a HUGE fan of Japanese animation (really, I grew up watching anime like Unico, Voltron, Maya the Honey Bee, Noozles and Adventures of the Little Koala back when anime wasn't even that popular in the States) and I wanted to incorporate shout outs to some of those shows.

I also wanted to bind all these elements together in an epic narrative that had a beginning and a conclusion, structured with the same four narrative arcs used in Neon Genesis Evangelion (Prologue Arc, Action Arc, Descent Arc and The Bitter End).

My writing back then was pretty terrible but I spent a lot of time world building the fictional location that DNG takes place in; Manga-Land. I wanted the story to be seen as more than just a parody and something that could stand on its own two feet even if people don't know what is being parodied. This meant Manga-Land needed to have a rich history able to explain why meta-human mutants, wizards, demons and super advanced technology are commonplace.

I won't bore you with the details right now but know that Manga-Land's history can be traced from the birth of the universe unto the present day. All of the backstory isn't likely to get mentioned in the show but it helps me keep the world consistent and have logical explanations for everything.

Over the years I polished the scripts and continued to flesh out the world. Some things became more simplified and others became more complicated. In 2005 I was medically discharged by the US Army and left to figure out what to do with my life. I decided I would self-publish DNG as a webcomic. I hired an artist, Jenn Brooks, and spent a couple thousand dollars of my savings into marketing, website design and even a print run of the first issue.

Sadly, despite my best efforts the webcomic never caught on and the artist lost interest. We parted in 2006 and I decided to try my hand at making a live action version of DNG. This decision put me on the path to attending film school (and several other mis-adventures that are best left for my memoirs) and ultimately where we are today.

Before Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World came out I had a difficult time explaining what I wanted to do; I was literally directing people to look at various clips from multiple games, anime, tv shows and so forth. Now that Scott Pilgrim is out I simply tell people I'm trying to make "Scott Pilgrim Meets Power Rangers" because that is the simplest way to describe the visual style. However, it's not just a blatant copy and the narrative structure is so different: think of Gainax shows like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. It might have outlandish silliness but there's also a lot of mental anguish and philosophical revelation beneath the surface. Much like director Shinichi "Nabeshin" Watanabe I want to make people laugh one minute and cry the next.

Okay, enough backstory. That's not what you're here for, right? You want to know about the hero.

The hero of DNG is Howard. He is a luckless loser who tries hard but never seems to make it to the finish. When he is introduced to the audience he has finally given up and accepted he will never be the kind of person he wants to be.

That's when, across the universe, Dragon Sage Siyoki performs a Hero Summoning spell to find the next savior for Manga-Land but totally botches the spell. Instead of a 'hero' he calls forth a 'zero', and the universe's biggest zero is Howard.

Siyoki bestows Howard with the power of the Gold Dragon, the protector of Manga-Land and the deity Siyoki serves. The Gold Dragon can't directly use his power anymore because.....well, I'll save that for later. The point is this: He needs an avatar to accept his power and use it to transform into GKaiser (Gold Emperor).

Unfortunately the Gold Dragon's power requires the "heart of a true hero" in order to be effective; the avatar must be brave, courageous, kind and filled with the spirit of justice. Feelings of hatred, resentment, fear, jealousy and doubt weaken the Gold Dragon's power. As you might suspect someone like Howard is filled with these negative emotions and is not an ideal candidate.

I don't want to give too much away right now but I'll say this: the theme of DNG is 'masks'.

Howard is not the right person to be a hero but he's expected to wear the mask of one. Even though he has doubts and fears, he tries to be what he is expected to be, but he utterly fails at it. It is only when he strives with all his heart to become the mask he wears that he starts to succeed, and little by little the mask he wears becomes the person that he is.

I think that is how it works with people in general; we all have faults and parts of ourselves we hide behind a false facade, but little by little we can become the person we want to be if we just keep trying.

Enough sentimentality. You're ready to hear about the villain, right?

Every story needs a great antagonist. The primary antagonist of DNG is Dark Shinobi, a mega-maniacal billionaire that owns the world's largest media conglomerate.

By the way, Dark Shinobi is his real name and it's purposely redundant. Mind you, it's not the human name he was given but....Dark Shinobi is the reincarnation of a Dark Overlord of the Universe who tried to conquer Manga-Land in its distant past. He was defeated by the Gold Dragon and had his power sealed away. Every time he reincarnates he tries to regain his power and finally conquer Manga-Land. It is the duty of GKaiser to make sure that never happens.

Dark Shinobi, like all great villains, represents the shadow of the hero; if Howard gives in to his negative emotions and mis-uses the great power he holds then Dark Shinobi is the kind of person he would become.

But, again like great villains, he's also Howard's opposite in every way; Dark Shinobi, while possessing the worst intentions for everyone, has had a very successful life. And unlike Howard who tries hard to directly affect change, Dark Shinobi primarily operates through his minions the Legion of Spooky Doom.

So, like, are there any babes in this show?

Yep! The female lead is Jemma, a rising pop star who Howard saves from her evil ex-manager, a follower of Dark Shinobi.

More than just a damsel in distress she provides Howard with emotional support and guidance. She's not just a love interest; she's a Mentor, and her unique outlook on life inspires Howard to re-examine himself on more than one occassion.

Welcome to the first post of the Deathfist Ninja GKaiser Production Blog (wow, ain't that a mouthful)!

DNG is a web series currently in production. If I were to describe it in a single breath, I would say "Scott Pilgrim meets Power Rangers" but it's so much more than that! The show is a live action adaption of a little known webcomic of the same name (which I would link to but, unfortunately, my website host of five years skipped town this month...).

I wrote the webcomic in 2005 under the pen-name 'Jim Freedan' but much to my disappointment it never grew much of a fanbase. The artist and I eventually parted ways but I never gave up the hope to revive DNG someday.

Fast forward five years later and I've attended film school, made a few dozen short videos (many of which are no-budget game reviews) and many film-maker friends looking for something to build their reputations on. I decided it was time to start creating DNG as a live action film. Unfortunately we were unable to raise enough funds to create a feature film so I re-wrote the story to be a 7 episode web series with each episode running approx. 22 minutes.

This blog will chronicle the trials and tribulations of what we experience and do while producing the web series!
